Redwood House
North Park, San Diego, CA • 2017

Structural engineering for a 2,000-square-foot home and attached studio built into the tail of a San Diego canyon. Cast-in-place concrete retaining walls brace a basement studio at canyon grade, while a steel beam structure cantilevers the living space out among the trees; the balance of the house is wood-framed. A three-story courtyard carved from the center organizes the "yin-yang" plan so the canyon stays visible from every room, with circulation flowing between interior and exterior across a floating steel entry bridge. Dark-stained cedar lap siding, raw hot-rolled steel, and fully planted green roofs tie the building to its landscape.

Omar Mobayed founded Mobayed Consulting Group in 2000 and has led it as principal structural engineer ever since. As MCG's responsible registrant, he is the engineer of record behind architecturally ambitious residential, mixed-use, and civic projects throughout San Diego and beyond.
Over more than 40 years, Omar has been repeatedly trusted by design-driven architects — including Sebastian Mariscal Studio, Jeff Svitak, and Jonathan Segal — to make demanding architecture stand up: long cantilevers, hillside construction, exposed concrete and steel, and large glass openings. His work spans every scale — from bathroom remodels and award-winning homes to schools, downtown density, and high-rise towers.
